What’s the difference between a standard lock and an auto-engage lock?

When people start looking at composite doors in Swansea, they usually notice the style first. But the lock affects how the door works every day, so it deserves just as much attention.

The difference between a standard lock and an auto-engage lock is easy to understand when you see how they work.

With a standard lock, you close the door and lift the handle to engage the locking points. Then you turn the key or thumbturn to lock the deadbolt. With an auto-engage lock, the locking points engage by themselves as soon as the door closes. After that, you use the key or thumbturn to lock the deadbolt.

So the difference is not that one has a deadbolt and the other does not. Both have one. The difference appears when the door starts to secure itself.

What is a standard lock like to use every day?

A standard lock gives you a more manual routine. You close the door, lift the handle and then lock it.

Many people already know this process from traditional multipoint doors. It can also feel reassuring to do each step yourself. You know exactly when the door is secure because you have just locked it.

But it does depend on habit. Until you lift the handle, the hooks do not engage. So if someone closes the door and walks away without lifting the handle, the first part of the locking process has not happened.

For some homes, that is not a problem. For others, it can feel like one more thing to remember.

What is different about using an auto-engage lock?

An auto-engage lock removes that first manual step. As soon as the door closes, the multipoint locking points engage automatically. You still use the key or thumbturn to lock the deadbolt but the door starts securing itself immediately.

In daily use, the door feels more helpful and more forgiving. You close it and it is already doing part of the work for you.

This is really about convenience

Both types of lock can be part of a secure door setup. The door itself may include a reinforced frame, a multipoint locking system, adjustable hinges, secure keeps and accredited hardware. Features like Snap Secure Technology, ABS 3 Star diamond-grade locks, Secured by Design and TS007 3 Star accreditation all help.

That is why this should not be seen as a simple choice between good and bad security. A better way to see it is that both options can be part of a strong and secure door. The main difference is how they feel to use.

Do you want to lift the handle and engage the system yourself? Or would you rather the door start that process automatically as soon as it closes? That is the decision you have to make.
